About Music for Missions
The Music for Missions Series is sponsored by the United Methodist Men to support missions beyond the regular church budget. Jack Sartain said," Our concerts are here to provide a venue for good performances, free concerts for our community and money for the mission programs. We charge no fees, sell no tickets. We just pass the plate and ask our audiences to be generous. They are!"
Charles Gibbs, President of UMM, listed the missions supported. They are Aldersgate Homes, Wesley Homes, St. Luke's Episcopal Homeless Program, Trinity UMC Homeless Shelter, the Appalachian Project, Honduras Outreach, Tucker Cooperative Ministry, Tucker NET Food Pantry, Special Olympics and DeKalb Habitat for Humanity and others. Almost 1200 artists have been heard by 13,000 guests and about $35,000 has been raised. Several local, area and international missions are supported by this unique program.
Join us for all these wonderful concerts and to help support our mission programs that are supported through this concert series.
History
In late 1997, the United Methodist Men at Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church in Tucker explored ideas that held unique promise for their impact on the DeKalb community at large. The result is a continuous program since February, 1998, called “Music for Missions”, with ninety-seven FREE concerts thus far. No admission is charged and no tickets are sold. All funds raised are voluntary. From these free will offerings, over $45,000 has been raised to benefit more than 42 charities called missions. Through the series since 1998 about 16,000 DeKalb and other citizens have been in attendance. They were entertained and inspired by over 1500 performing artists. On each first Sunday night of most months and sometimes twice a month performances by choruses, bands, dancers, quartets, opera stars, jugglers, magicians and many others are presented in a concert setting. The attendance at the concerts is many times 2 to 3 times the number at morning services with the members of LRUMC in the minority of about 15 percent of the audience. Each performance brings its own following, thus a different audience profile each time.
As an
additional part of its community work in the arts, the United
Methodist Men has begun a program to find music instruments for the
PATH Academy, located in the Chamblee-Doraville area of DeKalb and a
charter school of the DeKalb County School System. This multi-ethnic
school has an enrollment of 270 students representing 15 different
countries.
